Mechanical Design Engineer Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or similar.
- Proven experience in mechanical/hvac design for buildings, with exposure to dynamic thermal simulation.
- Proficiency with simulation tools such as DesignBuilder (or equivalent dynamic thermal modelling software).
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, load calculations, plant sizing, ductwork/pipework design and controls logic.
- Ability to interpret M&E design drawings, specifications, sequences of operation, controls schematics.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the capability to draw meaningful conclusions from simulation data and design reviews.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to produce technical reports and communicate results to a variety of audiences.
- Comfortable working in a hybrid environment (office + remote).
- Experience in building services design for complex sectors (data centres, life sciences, large-scale residential).
- Prior use of DesignBuilder in a professional context, with dynamic thermal modelling examples.
- Familiarity with building performance modelling for rating schemes such as LEED, BREEAM or WELL.
- Understanding of building energy regulations (e.g. Ireland Part L, NZEB standards) and occupant comfort/overheating assessment criteria.
- Experience using support tools such as AutoCAD, Revit and BMS/controls data.
- Programming or scripting experience (e.g., Python) for automating simulation workflows.
- Professional certification in energy management, measurement & verification (e.g., CEM, CMVP) or chartered engineering status.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer:
- Carry out mechanical design work for building services (HVAC, ventilation, thermal systems) including concept through detailed design phases.
- Perform dynamic thermal simulations to assess building thermal performance, occupant comfort, system loads and envelope behaviour.
- Utilise simulation software (e.g., DesignBuilder, EnergyPlus, IES VE or equivalent) to model building energy use, system interactions and dynamic responses to changing conditions.
- Collaborate with architects, M&E engineers and sustainability teams to integrate simulation outputs into design decisions.
- Interpret simulation results and provide actionable recommendations for system optimisation, energy reduction and building performance improvement.
- Generate clear, concise technical reports and present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Support tender and procurement activities by providing simulation input, design specification checks and system review.
- Review mechanical design drawings, perform thermal-comfort analyses, overheating assessments and verify compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
- Stay up to date with industry best practice in dynamic modelling, building performance analysis and sustainable mechanical design.
