You are a Mechanical Design Engineer with strong experience in simulation software and dynamic thermal modelling looking to join a forward-thinking engineering consultancy in Dublin.

In this role, you will design mechanical building systems, HVAC, ventilation, and thermal plant, while using advanced tools such as DesignBuilder to carry out detailed building performance simulations. This is a hybrid position, offering a balance of office collaboration and remote flexibility.

This position combines mechanical design with specialist simulation work, making it ideal for someone who enjoys technical problem-solving and building performance analysis.

You will work closely with architects, engineers, and sustainability teams, using simulation outputs to inform system sizing, energy strategies, and overall building efficiency.

For those eager to learn more about this exciting opportunity, please do not hesitate to reach out to Stephen at stephen@breaghrecruitment.com / 015314345

Mechanical Design Engineer Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or similar.
  • Proven experience in mechanical/hvac design for buildings, with exposure to dynamic thermal simulation.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools such as DesignBuilder (or equivalent dynamic thermal modelling software).
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, load calculations, plant sizing, ductwork/pipework design and controls logic.
  • Ability to interpret M&E design drawings, specifications, sequences of operation, controls schematics.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the capability to draw meaningful conclusions from simulation data and design reviews.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to produce technical reports and communicate results to a variety of audiences.
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid environment (office + remote).
  • Experience in building services design for complex sectors (data centres, life sciences, large-scale residential).
  • Prior use of DesignBuilder in a professional context, with dynamic thermal modelling examples.
  • Familiarity with building performance modelling for rating schemes such as LEED, BREEAM or WELL.
  • Understanding of building energy regulations (e.g. Ireland Part L, NZEB standards) and occupant comfort/overheating assessment criteria.
  • Experience using support tools such as AutoCAD, Revit and BMS/controls data.
  • Programming or scripting experience (e.g., Python) for automating simulation workflows.
  • Professional certification in energy management, measurement & verification (e.g., CEM, CMVP) or chartered engineering status.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer:
  • Carry out mechanical design work for building services (HVAC, ventilation, thermal systems) including concept through detailed design phases.
  • Perform dynamic thermal simulations to assess building thermal performance, occupant comfort, system loads and envelope behaviour.
  • Utilise simulation software (e.g., DesignBuilder, EnergyPlus, IES VE or equivalent) to model building energy use, system interactions and dynamic responses to changing conditions.
  • Collaborate with architects, M&E engineers and sustainability teams to integrate simulation outputs into design decisions.
  • Interpret simulation results and provide actionable recommendations for system optimisation, energy reduction and building performance improvement.
  • Generate clear, concise technical reports and present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Support tender and procurement activities by providing simulation input, design specification checks and system review.
  • Review mechanical design drawings, perform thermal-comfort analyses, overheating assessments and verify compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Stay up to date with industry best practice in dynamic modelling, building performance analysis and sustainable mechanical design.

The Package:

Salary will be DOE, but you can expect a salary of at least €65,000 plus package.
