The Role – Senior Electrical Engineer Substation Design
This is a senior office based design role focused on primary and secondary substation design for transmission and distribution projects. You will take full technical ownership of substation design packages from feasibility and detailed design through to construction support and final handover.
As a Senior Electrical Engineer specialising in substation design, you will play a key role in engineering decision making, programme delivery and design quality. You will also mentor junior engineers while ensuring all electrical designs meet ESB, EirGrid and relevant industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead primary and secondary substation design for high voltage and medium voltage projects
• Review employer requirements, technical specifications and drawings in detail
• Deliver full lifecycle substation design from feasibility through detailed design to construction stage
• Prepare and review calculations, technical studies and procurement specifications
• Ensure compliance with ESB, EirGrid and relevant electrical engineering standards
• Identify scope changes, variations and value engineering opportunities
• Manage design programmes to ensure delivery on time and within budget
• Review and approve design submissions prior to issue
• Support tender submissions and provide technical input during bid stages
• Liaise with clients, utilities and key stakeholders on substation engineering matters
• Mentor and support junior electrical engineers within the design team
• Review construction work packs and provide technical support to site teams
• Identify design risks and implement mitigation strategies
• Champion health, safety and quality across all engineering activities
About You
• Honours Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in substation design, power engineering or utilities
• Strong technical background in primary and secondary substation design
• Experience delivering transmission or distribution substation projects across the full lifecycle
• Knowledge of ESB and or EirGrid specifications is highly advantageous
• Proficient in AutoCAD, Eplan and Microsoft Office, with experience in cable design software beneficial
• Strong understanding of the design and construction interface
• Commercially aware with the ability to identify variations and scope changes
• Confident communicator with client facing experience
• Highly organised with the ability to manage competing deadlines
• Safety focused, quality driven and proactive in approach
• Comfortable working independently while mentoring junior engineers
