The Role: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Based in Co Galway, this Senior Mechanical Design Engineer role will support the delivery of water and wastewater treatment projects from concept through to detailed design and project delivery.
You will work closely with Lead Mechanical Engineers, Process Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and project delivery teams, taking responsibility for mechanical design solutions across treatment plants, pumping stations, and associated infrastructure projects.
This role offers significant involvement in design development, equipment selection, hydraulic calculations, technical specifications, tender support, and mentoring junior engineers within the business.
Must Have Requirements
You are an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in water and wastewater infrastructure projects. You have proven experience delivering mechanical designs for treatment plants, pumping stations, and process systems within a multidisciplinary environment.
You possess excellent problem-solving abilities, strong commercial awareness, and a detailed understanding of quality, safety, and regulatory requirements associated with infrastructure projects. You are capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high technical standards and meeting programme deadlines.
Strong communication skills, technical report writing experience, and the ability to mentor junior engineers are essential for success in this role.

Must Have Requirements
- Must have a Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent recognised qualification
- Minimum 6 years' experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally within water or wastewater infrastructure projects
- Proven experience required delivering mechanical designs for treatment plants, pumping stations, or process infrastructure projects
- Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment selection, piping systems, valves, pumps, and treatment process equipment
- Full Irish or EU driving licence required
- Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards Chartership
- Experience producing PFDs, P&IDs, and detailed technical specifications
- Experience supporting tender submissions and commercial evaluations
- Working knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD software
- Familiarity with Irish Water, Uisce Éireann, or municipal infrastructure projects
- Structural steel design experience
- FEA analysis experience
- CFD modelling experience
- Experience working on pharmaceutical or industrial process project
- Knowledge of international design standards including ASME and EN codes
- Perform preliminary and detailed mechanical design for water and wastewater treatment facilities
- Design pumping stations, process systems, and associated infrastructure
- Select mechanical process equipment including pumps, valves, dosing systems, and treatment plant equipment
- Develop PFDs, P&IDs, equipment layouts, and mechanical design deliverables
- Prepare hydraulic, energy, and mechanical design calculations
- Produce and review technical specifications and schedules
- Support tendering and estimating teams during bid preparation
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout project delivery
- Ensure compliance with quality, environmental, and health and safety requirements
- Research emerging technologies and innovative engineering solutions
- Mentor and support junior engineers within the design team
- Engage with clients, suppliers, and key project stakeholders
