Lead Mechanical Engineer Data Centre Construction
Italy
Leading European Engineering Contractor delivering mission critical projects
€95,000 to €115,000 DOE plus full package
The Company
This organisation is a recognised leader in the delivery of large scale data centre and mission critical projects across Europe. Known for technical excellence and structured project delivery, they operate at the forefront of mechanical and electrical engineering in high specification environments.
With a strong presence in Italy and across mainland Europe, their teams are trusted to deliver complex fast track projects where quality, commissioning and programme certainty are non negotiable. Their culture is built around engineering leadership, safety, and developing strong technical teams on site.
The Role – Lead Mechanical Engineer
As Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will take full ownership of the mechanical engineering function on a major data centre project in Milan. This is a senior site based role where you will lead design management, technical coordination, commissioning strategy and engineering delivery from pre construction through to handover.
You will act as the technical anchor for the mechanical package, ensuring systems are installed, tested and commissioned in line with specification, programme and client expectations. Your leadership will directly influence quality, safety, programme performance and the development of the wider engineering team.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and manage the mechanical engineering team across all work packages
• Drive a strong health and safety culture, promoting safe systems of work and leading by example
• Oversee design review, validation and technical change control on HVAC, pipework and building services systems
• Manage procurement support including RFQ reviews, technical submissions and equipment tracking
• Develop and maintain system trackers, design matrices and commissioning documentation
• Coordinate closely with BIM teams, BMS vendors and specialist subcontractors
• Contribute to and update the overall project programme and commissioning schedule
• Plan and manage mechanical testing and commissioning activities including flushing, pressure testing, balancing and system verification
• Identify and mitigate engineering risks, maintaining clear and accurate risk logs
• Chair and contribute to technical and commissioning meetings
• Issue weekly engineering and commissioning progress reports
• Mentor project engineers and support their progression into senior roles
• Maintain strong commercial awareness, understanding the cost and programme impact of engineering decisions
About You
• Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering
• 8 plus years’ experience in mechanical project engineering within large scale construction
• Previous experience as Senior Mechanical Engineer or Lead Mechanical Engineer on data centre or mission critical projects
• Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, pipework, plant rooms and commissioning processes
• Proven ability to manage design reviews, technical submittals and change control
• Experience leading engineering teams on site in fast track construction environments
• Comfortable managing commissioning activities and witnessing testing procedures
• Strong communication skills with the ability to lead meetings and mentor junior engineers
• Detail focused with a commitment to quality, safety and programme delivery
What’s on Offer
Salary: €95,000 to €115,000 DOE plus package
Why Apply?
This is a genuine leadership opportunity on a high value data centre development in Milan. You will not be confined to a narrow package or limited to paperwork. Instead, you will shape engineering strategy, drive commissioning performance and influence how the project is delivered from a technical standpoint.
For experienced mechanical engineers looking to step into or further develop within a Lead Mechanical Engineer role on mission critical construction projects, this offers long term career progression across the European data centre sector.
