The Company
This is an opportunity to join a specialist engineering contractor delivering high voltage electrical infrastructure across Ireland and Europe. The company operates as a full EPC provider within the power and utilities sector, delivering complex grid connection, transmission and distribution projects for major utilities, renewable energy developers and infrastructure clients.
With demand for grid capacity increasing rapidly due to renewable energy and electrification, the business continues to expand its HV engineering team. Their work focuses on high voltage substations, switchgear installations and grid infrastructure that supports the energy transition and large scale power network upgrades.
The Role – Primary Substation Design Engineer
As a Primary Substation Design Engineer you will be responsible for the design of high voltage substations ranging from 38kV up to 220kV. Working within a specialist HV engineering team, you will develop primary plant layouts, equipment arrangements and supporting structural designs required for large scale power infrastructure projects.
This role plays a key part in delivering reliable and compliant substation designs that support the safe operation of national grid and utility networks. You will collaborate closely with project managers, commissioning teams and clients to ensure designs meet technical, safety and programme requirements.
Key Responsibilities
• Design primary systems for high voltage substations from 38kV to 220kV
• Develop primary plant layouts and substation equipment arrangements
• Design structural steel supports for high voltage equipment and infrastructure
• Carry out electrical engineering calculations and technical design studies
• Ensure compliance with utility standards, grid codes and safety regulations
• Work closely with project engineers, commissioning teams and clients
• Support the delivery of substation engineering packages from concept through to construction
• Provide technical input during project planning and design reviews
About You
• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
• Experience in primary design of high voltage substations
• Strong knowledge of HV switchgear, equipment clearances and plant layouts
• Experience designing structural steel supports for electrical equipment is advantageous
• Background working within utilities, grid infrastructure or power projects
• Ability to produce accurate engineering calculations and technical documentation
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate within project teams
• Motivated to develop expertise in high voltage power infrastructure
