Senior Electrical Engineer – Substation Design You are an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer with a strong background in substation and power infrastructure design, looking to join a growing engineering team delivering major power, renewable and grid infrastructure projects across Ireland.
This is a predominantly office-based senior design role, with flexibility to be based in Dublin, Cork, Limerick or Tralee, and occasional site visits as required. You will take technical ownership of substation design packages, contribute to key engineering decisions, and support the mentoring and development of junior engineers while ensuring all design outputs meet the highest technical, quality and safety standards.

Senior Electrical Engineer – Substation Design – Skills & Experience: Honours Degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering
Minimum 5 years’ industry experience within power, utilities, renewables or substation engineering
Strong technical expertise in primary and secondary substation design
Proven experience delivering substation design projects across the full lifecycle
Knowledge of ESB and/or EirGrid specifications advantageous
Proficient in AutoCAD, Eplan and Microsoft Office (design studies and cable design software beneficial)
Strong understanding of design–construction interfaces
Excellent client-facing, communication and stakeholder management skills
Strong commercial awareness and ability to identify scope changes and variations
Ability to work independently while supporting and mentoring junior team members
Highly organised with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
Safety-focused, proactive and quality-driven approach
As a Senior Electrical Engineer – Substation Design you will: Act as a Senior Substation Electrical Engineer within the engineering team
Review employer’s requirements, specifications and drawings in detail
Take ownership of all aspects of electrical substation design including primary design, secondary design, calculations and procurement specifications
Review and approve design submissions prior to issue, identifying value engineering opportunities
Ensure designs are delivered in line with agreed programmes and budgets
Identify scope changes and variations and advise project teams accordingly
Ensure full compliance with relevant standards, specifications and regulations
Manage substation design projects from feasibility through construction and final handover
Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers
Support tendering and bid submissions with technical input where required
Engage in client liaison and business development activities as needed
Support operations teams with technical advice and design solutions
Review and approve construction work packs prior to site commencement
Identify design risks and implement appropriate mitigation strategies
Remain up to date with new technologies, design innovations and industry best practice
Health, Safety & Quality: Champion a strong safety-first culture across all engineering activities
Ensure all design outputs meet required technical, quality and safety standards
Promote right-first-time delivery and continuous improvement
Maintain high standards of documentation, governance and compliance
