Lead Mechanical Engineer Data Centre

This opportunity is with a major European engineering contractor delivering large scale data centre and mission critical projects across Ireland, Italy, Germany and the Nordics. The Role Lead Mechanical Engineer
As Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will take full ownership of the mechanical engineering function on a major data centre project in Milan. This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for design management, technical coordination, commissioning strategy and team development.
You will sit at the centre of the project, driving engineering standards, overseeing mechanical packages and ensuring that quality, safety and programme targets are consistently achieved. Your input will directly influence commissioning readiness, system performance and successful client handover on a complex mission critical facility.
Key Responsibilities
Health and Safety
• Promote mechanical safe systems of work across all packages
• Manage engineering and commissioning Safe Plans of Action
• Support toolbox talks and safety audits
• Ensure commissioning activities are carried out in line with EHS standards
Programme and Planning
• Contribute to and monitor the overall mechanical programme
• Track CFCI and OFCI equipment delivery schedules
• Update commissioning programmes and flag risks early
• Identify and remove engineering roadblocks affecting progress
Engineering and Technical Leadership
• Review and validate mechanical design documentation
• Manage coordinated drawings, BIM reviews and technical submittals
• Oversee system trackers, design matrices and change control
• Verify equipment selections, calculations and system sizing
• Lead technical workshops and commissioning readiness meetings
• Manage BMS and control vendors from a mechanical perspective
Procurement and Package Management
• Produce RFQ packs including scope, specifications and compliance matrices
• Evaluate technical submissions and align scope gaps
• Track procurement progress and escalate delays
• Ensure warranties and documentation are completed correctly
Quality and Commissioning
• Define mechanical quality processes, inspection plans and test packs
• Develop testing protocols and commissioning scripts
• Manage flushing, pressure testing, balancing and leak detection
• Witness and record commissioning activities
• Close out commissioning issues methodically and efficiently
Risk and Reporting
• Identify and mitigate mechanical and commissioning risks
• Maintain risk logs and issue weekly engineering reports
• Communicate technical and programme updates clearly to senior stakeholders
People Leadership
• Lead and mentor mechanical engineers across all levels
• Allocate engineers to packages and support their development
• Support technical interviews and recruitment where required
• Build a high performance engineering culture on site
About You
• Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering
• Significant experience on large scale MEP projects, ideally data centres or mission critical facilities
• Proven background as a Senior Mechanical Engineer or Lead Mechanical Engineer
• Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, chilled water, cooling plant and mechanical commissioning
• Experience managing BIM coordination and technical change control
• Confident leading technical meetings and driving engineering decisions
• Strong understanding of commissioning processes and quality assurance
• Commercially aware with an understanding of cost and programme impacts
• Natural leader who develops engineers and builds capable teams
• Detail focused, structured and driven to deliver right first time
