The Questions Construction Professionals Wish They'd Asked
The Questions Construction Professionals Wish They'd Asked Before Accepting the Job

Sometimes the biggest career mistakes aren't the jobs you turn down. They're the questions you never asked.

When someone accepts a new role, they're usually excited.

The interview went well. The salary looks good. The company has a strong reputation. Everyone seems friendly.

It feels like the right move.

But a few months later, the conversations we have can sound very different.

"I didn't realise I'd spend three hours a day driving."

"I thought there'd be more opportunities to progress."

"Nobody mentioned this project was nearly finished."

"The money's good... I just don't enjoy coming into work."

After speaking to hundreds of construction professionals across Ireland every year, we've noticed something interesting.

People rarely regret asking too many questions before accepting a job.

They almost always regret not asking enough.

Construction Careers Have Changed

A decade ago, most conversations started with one question.

"What's the salary?"

Of course, salary still matters. It always will.

But today, experienced Site Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Project Managers, Site Managers, Health & Safety professionals and M&E specialists are asking something completely different.

They're thinking beyond the next payslip.

They're thinking about the next five years.

Because the best career move isn't always the one that pays the most today.

It's the one that still feels like the right decision two years from now.

"I Assumed There Would Be More Work"

One of the biggest regrets people share is assuming the company has a strong pipeline.

They see an impressive project.

A busy site.

A recognised contractor.

Everything looks secure.

But they never ask what happens after this project finishes.

Is there another project already secured?

Will you move onto another site?

Will you have to relocate?

Will your role even exist in twelve months?

Experienced construction professionals know that today's project isn't the full story.

Tomorrow's workload matters just as much.

"I Thought Promotion Would Just Happen"

Many professionals join a company believing progression is simply a matter of time.

Work hard.

Deliver results.

Wait for recognition.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always work like that.

Some companies have clear development plans.

Others don't.

That's why one of the smartest questions you can ask is:

"What does progression actually look like here?"

Not in theory.

In reality.

How many people have been promoted internally?

What does the next role involve?

How long does it usually take?

Companies that invest in their people are usually proud to answer these questions.

"I Never Asked About the Travel"

A role advertised in Dublin.

An office in Cork.

Projects across Leinster.

It all sounds straightforward.

Until your alarm starts ringing at 4:45 every morning.

Travel has become one of the biggest deciding factors for construction professionals across Ireland.

Not because people don't want to travel.

Because they want to know what they're committing to.

How many days on the road?

Will overnight stays be expected?

Will projects change frequently?

Can hybrid working apply to any part of the role?

A great salary can quickly lose its appeal if you're spending hours in traffic every day.

"I Didn't Ask Who I'd Actually Be Working With"

Culture is difficult to judge from one interview.

Most people meet one or two people.

Maybe three.

But those aren't necessarily the people you'll work with every day.

Who will you report to?

How experienced are they?

How long have they been with the company?

How big is the team?

What's staff turnover like?

Construction is a people business.

The project matters.

The salary matters.

But the people around you often determine whether you enjoy Monday morning.

"I Focused Too Much on Salary"

This is probably the most common reflection we hear.

Not because salary isn't important.

But because it's rarely the only thing that determines whether someone stays.

Think about it.

Would you trade €5,000 for:

  • Better work-life balance?

  • A manager who genuinely supports you?

  • Larger, more interesting projects?

  • Clear career progression?

  • Greater job security?

  • A shorter commute?

  • Time with your family?

For many experienced professionals, the answer is yes.

That's because career satisfaction is rarely built on salary alone.

What Construction Professionals Are Asking for Now

The conversations have changed.

Today, experienced candidates are far more likely to ask:

  • How secure is the project pipeline?

  • What type of projects will I actually work on?

  • What's the management team like?

  • How much travel is involved?

  • How is performance measured?

  • Is there genuine career progression?

  • How long do people stay with the company?

  • Why is this position available?

  • Is the company growing?

  • Will I actually enjoy working here?

These aren't difficult questions.

They're smart questions.

And the best employers expect them.

Why Stability Matters More Than Ever

The Irish construction industry has remained incredibly busy across residential developments, infrastructure, water, energy, commercial projects and data centres.

But professionals have become more selective.

After years of market uncertainty, changing workloads and evolving priorities, people aren't simply chasing bigger salaries anymore.

They're looking for confidence.

Confidence that the company has work ahead.

Confidence that they'll keep developing.

Confidence that they're joining a team they'll genuinely enjoy being part of.

That's a very different conversation from the one the industry was having ten years ago.

The Best Employers Welcome Better Questions

Good employers don't get uncomfortable when candidates ask detailed questions.

They welcome them.

Because they know recruitment works both ways.

An interview isn't just about proving you're right for the company.

It's about finding out whether the company is right for you.

The strongest career decisions are rarely rushed.

They're made by people who take the time to understand what they're really signing up for.

Before You Accept Any Construction Job Offer…

Ask yourself one final question.

"What might I wish I'd asked six months from now?"

That single question could save you years of frustration.

At Breagh Recruitment, we speak to construction professionals across Ireland every day. Those conversations give us a unique view of what's changing in the market, what the best employers are offering, and what candidates genuinely value today.
