Electrical HV and MV Design Engineer – Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution

This established high voltage and medium voltage engineering contractor has been delivering turnkey power generation, transmission and distribution projects across Ireland and the UK for over two decades. Their work spans HV and MV substations, grid connections, control and protection systems, SCADA and network upgrades for utility and industrial clients.
With continued growth in grid infrastructure and renewable energy connections, they are expanding their in house design capability and investing in experienced Electrical HV and MV Design Engineers who want to work on technically challenging, high profile power projects.
The Role – Electrical HV and MV Design Engineer
As an Electrical HV and MV Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the detailed design and delivery of high voltage and medium voltage substation and power distribution projects.
Working closely with the Design Engineering Manager, project teams and site operations, you will produce detailed control and protection designs, substation drawings and automation system documentation that directly support safe, efficient and compliant project delivery. Your work will influence quality, constructability, commissioning and long term performance of critical power infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
• Carry out calculation and detailed design of HV and MV substation documentation including CT, CVT, LVAC, LVDC, logic diagrams and trip tables
• Design control and protection circuits for switchgear and substation applications
• Generate drawing sets for control and protection panels using Eplan
• Produce equipment installation drawings and layouts using AutoCAD
• Perform protection studies and system analysis using ETAP software
• Develop signal lists and configure protection and communication devices
• Produce front views, plan views and panel arrangement drawings to support site teams
• Develop Functional Design Specifications for automation and control systems
• Complete detailed system design including network architecture, instrumentation and supervisory control systems
• Review electrical specifications, employer’s requirements and scope of work
• Identify scope gaps, technical risks and design variations at an early stage
• Generate material take offs and requisitions for procurement
• Manage technical submittals and track approval status in line with programme
• Liaise with suppliers on technical specifications and component selection
• Review installation works with operations teams to ensure constructability and maintenance access
• Support commissioning activities and contribute to O and M manual development
• Produce tender, construction and as built drawings for HV and MV systems
• Ensure all design activities comply with ISO systems, safety legislation and environmental standards
About You
• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering
• Minimum five years’ experience in HV and MV design, substation design or power systems engineering
• Strong understanding of electrical control and protection schematics and specifications
• Experience with Eplan, AutoCAD and ETAP or similar power system analysis software
• Knowledge of HV and MV switchgear, substations and protection schemes
• Commercially aware with the ability to understand project scope and variations
• Organised and detail focused, able to manage multiple design packages
• Confident communicator who can engage with project managers, site teams and supply chain
• Proactive, flexible and capable of working to tight deadlines
• Comfortable working independently while contributing to a collaborative engineering team
